Dharma Classes

Chinese Dharma Class

Sunday 10/08/2008 will be our study classes again, please come and join us for this special event at the Temple at 1.30PM.

English Dharma Class

Heart Sutra 1: 15th Aug, Friday, 7pm-9.30pm
Heart Sutra 2: 22nd Aug, Friday, 7pm-9.30pm

The Heart Sutra is the shortest and the most popular sutra in Buddhism. The Heart Sutra is regarded as the summation of the wisdom of Buddha. It expresses perfectly the insight attained by non-attachment, the doctrine of emptiness.
There will be half hour of meditation before the discussion. So come join us if you would like to learn more about it! :)

Winter Sleep Out!

Winter Sleep Out
1pm, 30th Aug till 12pm, 31th August
280. Guildford Road, Maylands

Every year in the month of August, the Young Adult Division brave the cold to raise funds for the homeless.

What do we do?
First we gather in front of super markets to fund raise and get people to sponsor us. On the day of the sleep out, we take our sleeping bag and sleep out in the COLD!!! Gasp! This is so we can experience, just for a night how the homeless spend their nights!

Our sleep out is more than just a night out in the cold. Starting at 1pm in the afternoon, there will be activities and workshops to raise awareness about homelessness amongst the youths! Participants would also learn more about what Mission Australia does and gain a better understanding to where their donations go. At the end of the sleep out participants return home with a greater sense of social responsibility and gratitude.

You can be a part of this cause too! We are looking for participants! We WELCOME ALL participants above the age of 12. Registration fee is a mere $5, and this includes dinner and breakfast. In the situation where you cannot attend the sleep out, please donate generously to our cause! We raised a total of $3000 for Mission Australia last year, and we look forward to increasing the sum this year!

If you are interested to know more about the event, contact: Ser Ley :: lees47@student.uwa.edu.au :: 04 3377 6507

Buddhist dog prays for worldly desires

From: Agence France-Presse
March 23, 2008
BUDDHISTS clasp their palms together to pray for enlightenment, but Conan, a chihuahua, appears to have more worldly motivations.
The dog has become a popular attraction at a Japanese temple after learning to imitate the worshippers around him.
'Conan started to pose in prayer like us whenever he wanted treats,' said Joei Yoshikuni, a priest at Jigenin temple on the southern island of Okinawa.

Stories of Dharma

Welcome to the inaugural feature of this blog titled: Stories of Dharma

Stories is a wonderful way in which one can convey messages of buddhism. This will be a weekly post. The first story that has been chosen for this week is our one and only Ajahn Brahmavamso from Perth. He currently resides in Serpentine as an Abbot and more information about him and his forest monastery can be found by visiting http://www.bswa.org. I hope you will enjoy 'The Worm'.

With Metta,

7th October 2007

THE WORM
Ajahn Brahmavamso

There is a wonderful little story about two monks who lived together in a monastery for many years; they were great friends. Then they died within a few months of one another. One of them got reborn in the heaven realms, the other monk got reborn as a worm in a dung pile. The one up in the heaven realms was having a wonderful time, enjoying all the heavenly pleasures. But he started thinking about his friend, "I wonder where my old mate has gone?" So he scanned all of the heaven realms, but could not find a trace of his friend. Then he scanned the realm of human beings, but he could not see any trace of his friend there, so he looked in the realm of animals and then of insects. Finally he found him, reborn as a worm in a dung pile... Wow! He thought: "I am going to help my friend. I am going to go down there to that dung pile and take him up to the heavenly realm so he too can enjoy the heavenly pleasures and bliss of living in these wonderful realms."

So he went down to the dung pile and called his mate. And the little worm wriggled out and said: "Who are you?", "I am your friend. We used to be monks together in a past life, and I have come up to take you to the heaven realms where life is wonderful and blissful." But the worm said: "Go away, get lost!" "But I am your friend, and I live in the heaven realms," and he described the heaven realms to him. But the worm said: "No thank you, I am quite happy here in my dung pile. Please go away." Then the heavenly being thought: "Well if I could only just grab hold of him and take him up to the heaven realms, he could see for himself." So he grabbed hold of the worm and started tugging at him; and the harder he tugged, the harder that worm clung to his pile of dung.

Do you get the moral of the story? How many of us are attached to our pile of dung?
